Crude implements for travel over the snow were known to many nations of antiquity, but the great Scandinavian sport of skiing was introduced to North America less than a century ago. Since then this popular winter pastime has snow-balled in popularity and today Canadian winters have become synonymous with the thrills and delights of skiing. Above, Louis B, de Passille executes a difficult jump-turn on one of the famous Laurentian hills.

Both sexes have taken to this great winter-time recreation with equal enthusiasm. While individual downhill running is tops in popularity, the Steady growth of ski' clubs has given a new impetus to cross-country touring by ski groups. One of the significant factors contributing to today's interest in skiing, has been the establishing of ski schools staffed by competent instructors. Most of Canada's ski resorts and clubs maintain the services of professionals.
