Canadian playwright-actor-director Gratien Gélinas beams his satisfaction as he gazes out over a scale-model of his new theatre "La Comédie Canadienne" which opened in Montreal recently with Jean Anouilh's "L'Alouette". The building embraces some of the most advanced features of contemporary theatre planning. Performances are given in both French and English -- the end of a 25-year dream for producer Gelinas.

Unusual lighting effects are used to evoke the various scenes of the play, eight separate sources of light being blended by a complex switchboard exclusive to the ComÈdie Canadienne. The play unfolds in a luminous atmosphere against which cathedral, palace, and dungeon scenes are painted with a rich and judicious use of light.
