Most of the world's rice, staple diet of Asiatics who comprise almost half of the population of the globe, is raised on terraced, irrigated land such as the one shown above. This field, on the beautiful island of Bali, Indonesia, is unusual in that it will support 2 crops of rice a year. In most countries it is only possible to harvest one crop a year, and for many years now this single crop has been seriously threatened by a dread disease, Penyakit merah.

Dr. Lockard believes that a nutrient unbalance, which results in a lack of oxygen, is responsible. This causes leaves to turn orange and shrivel, often cutting a crop in half, sometimes destroying it utterly. In Malaya the annual rice yield has been cut by 10-15%.

The family in Malaya is an economic unit and when it is time to harvest the precious rice harvest everyone must help. The cut sheaves balanced by the young boy above will be carried to his village home where they will be threshed later on as the family's needs require. If Dr. Lockard is successful in his efforts to find a cure for the "Red Disease" as the Malayans call it, he .will have succeeded in raising the standard of living of almost one half of the world's population who depend on rice.

As part of its Colombo Plan aid, Canada has sent plant pathologist Raymond Lockard of Kaslo, B.C. to Malaya where he has worked for 4 years to investigate the causes and find a cure for the disease which is known throughout the entire rice-growing world.
