For nearly half a century potato growers in many parts of the world have looked to Canada for their seed. There are good reasons for this. Canadian seed potatoes are noted for their vigour and freedom from disease. The cool growing conditions in Canada's highly specialized potato growing areas such as the maritimes especially favour the crop. Frequently harvesting machines which pick and place the potatoes in containers are employed, but the gravelly soil in the New Denmark area of New Brunswick (above) does not lend itself to mechanical harvesting.

The humble potato is one of the most important crops in Canada's agricultural economy. Premier vegetable, it ranks fifth among field crops in gross farm value, and is cultivated from eastern Newfoundland to Vancouver Island, and even within the Arctic Circle.
