Caption
Farmers bring their beets to local dumping grounds where they are loaded onto open box cars, caned to sugar factories for refining. Since it made its start at Farnham, Quebec in 1881, Canada's sugar beet industry has grown into an industry of considerable extent and importance until today Canada's sugar production runs as high as 300 million pounds --about one fifth of the country's total requirement of refined sugar.

Caption
Beets are grown on same land once in 3 years; one year is allowed for summer fallow, following year a crop such as wheat is planted. Harvesting machines remove beet tops, leave them on ground for cattle to eat. By-products of the sugar beet crop are beet pulp for cattle feed and beet molasses. All of Canada's sugar refining factories are modem and up-to-date; compare favourably with the best anywhere in the world.

Beth Wendorff of Taber, Alberta holds typical sugar beet -- part of Alberta's bumper '58 crop. 535,000 tons of beet roots were harvested from 38,000 acres of irrigated land around Lethbridge. It was largest crop of sugar beets ever grown in Canada; worth $9 million to Alberta's growers.

Canada has 7 sugar-refining factories: 3 in Alberta, 2 in Ontario, 1 in Manitoba and 1 in Quebec. Sugar content of beets runs around 17%. Adverse weather conditions will reduce sugar content. 1958's record was the result of almost perfect growing conditions.
