Miss Eitel, an adept and eager pupil, placed 2nd at the end of her training course, in a class of 25 rookie cops -- 22 of which were men. Policewoman Eitel pauses during a patrol of her beat on Hamilton's main street to admire the latest in wedding gowns. The Hamilton Force requires policewomen to resign following marriage. Qualifications and regulations vary from one city to another. Vancouver, B.C. claims to be the first Canadian city to use policewomen, having recruited the first woman for its force back in 1912. Vancouver's policewomen today number 16.

Most of the larger Canadian cities today employ women on their police force and the practice is steadily finding favour among many of the smaller cities. Women, in addition to performing most of the duties regularly carried out by policemen, are preferred for certain types of duty where young girls and women are involved. Above, Constable Eitel explains to class at the Robert Land School the importance of knowing and obeying traffic safety rules.
