The St. Lawrence Seaway's bold-visioned forefathers who dreamed of the day when great freighters would move down the mighty inland waterway laden with cargoes of grain from the West and return upstream with iron ore from the rich ore fields of Northern Quebec and Labrador are watching their dream come true. In June of this year the giant carrier Murray Bay, shown above as she entered the St. Lambert lock at Montreal, made her maiden voyage carrying the largest cargo to move through the Seaway since its opening. She moved 900,000 bushels of mixed grain from the Lake-head to the port of Quebec returned with a record 27,082 tons of iron ore loaded at Sept lies for Ashtabula, Ohio.

Diane Lunney of Aylmer, Que., who went down to Prescott to watch the Murray Bay on her maiden trip, ponders a group of canallers tied up on the old canal near Iroquois, Ont. These hard-working veterans of river traffic are becoming obsolete with advent of the big new Lakers. Murray Bay's cargo capacity is equal to nine of the 250-foot canallers.

Modern ore loading facilities at Sept Iles, Quebec, fill two of the Murray Bay's 20 hatches simultaneously. Cargo is destined for the hungry steel mills of the American hinterland. During first season on the Seaway grain and iron ore accounted for 62% of the traffic. There are 5 giant Lakers comparable to the Murray Bay now plying Seaway waters under Canadian registry; another is nearing completion.
