Caption
Crowds like this are common in Canada's new National Gallery. The glass-walled downtown building attracted a half-million people last year, reflecting a rising Canadian interest in art. There are now many small collectors who set aside a few hundred dollars each year for the purchase of art. The Gallery sponsors lectures, tours, and discussion groups, often in connection with the National Gallery Association, formed by and for people interested in art. It has over 1700 members. Spectators here discuss a touring Van Gogh exhibition, the largest collection of paintings by the great Dutch master ever to come to North America.
