When Winnipeg citizens throw a birthday party for the nation, they have a very direct way of making the announcement. A 21-gun salute in front of the Legislature boomed the news to everyone within earshot -- which was just about everyone.

Possibly the folk who had the most to do with the success of the party were members of a peculiarly amorphous, un-organized, independent, unaffiliated "group", who yet managed to be everywhere and see everything. These were the kids: they judged parades, inspected folk-dances, counted 21-gun salutes, ate cake, blew horns, sang, waved flags, and looked happy. What more could be asked of any citizen at a Dominion Day celebration?
