Main Text
As the world finishes another 600-million-mile trip around the sun, ending one more earthly year, Canadians can look back with satisfaction on a worthwhile journey. A time of steady growth, 1963 saw prairie wheat grow tall as never before, big-city skylines soar skyward in dazzling beauty, seaway tonnage rise, performing arts encouraged in practical fashion, massive power projects take shape. Oil exploration extended offshore, communications spanned vast oceans, science, industry and medicine surged forward. Organized sport spurred national fitness, a bicultural commission began a search for accord, luxurious new airports opened welcoming doors across the country. Canada's closest friends met in Ottawa to consolidate NATO and nature marked the year with a total eclipse of the sun from Yukon to Nova Scotia. In the northern seas the heaviest ice fields on record tested the prowess of Canada's intrepid icebreaker fleet. Plans for the future included the formation of the national centennial administration, the opening of the 1967 world's fair site, the charting of the Northwest Territories' future status and a phenomenal expansion in educational facilities for the nation's vigorous youth. Canada 1963 -- another year of steady progress.
