Shortly afterwards in the House of Commons, Mrs. Ann Shipley, of Kirkland Lake, Ont., M.P. for Temiskaming, became the first woman in Parliamentary history to launch a Throne Speech debate. Mrs. Shipley, an expert on Canada's mining industry, is one of four women members of the Commons.

Interest today is focussed on the Parliament Buildings at Ottawa, where the Right Honourable Vincent Massey opened the third session of Canada's twenty-second Parliament. Today's opening followed in the tradition set since Canada's first assembly met in 1867 -- ceremonies that have been preserved and re-enacted to this day as a reminder of the dignity and rights of Parliament. In response to the Governor General's summons, members of the House of Commons are shown assembled at the Bar of the Senate to hear the reading of the Throne Speech.
