Caption
At the kickwheel in his Kingston Peninsula home, Kjeld shapes a piece. Musquodoboit Valley stoneware clay is used, to which has been added a proportion of finely ground rock. Deichmanns do all their own work, deliberately limiting production to what they can handle between them.

A bisque bowl (once-fired in kiln) is decorated with one of Erica's original and fantastic animals in various under- glazes. A variety of Deichmann shapes is shown on the table and shelves. Years of research and over 5,500 experiments by Erica have resulted in distinctive glazes which characterize the Deichmanns' work.

Erica dips biscuited pieces in glaze as Kjeld scrapes bottoms before sponging. Unglazed base will show the stony clay and Deichmann signature. Pieces are twice-fired in kiln; rare colors of the brilliant, hard glaze on Deichmann-ware are derived from metallic oxides in glaze formulae.

Kjeld breaks the weathering clay, assisting it to dry before submersion in water bath prior to mixing. All wheel-thrown work is done by Kjeld who also prepares clay bodies, looks after firing. No molds or forms are used, and because all pieces are hand-thrown or modelled, each piece is a collector's item.

The perfection of form and purity of line which distinguish the work of Kjeld and Erica Deichmann are as familiar to lay lovers of pottery as they are to the seasoned critic. From the Deichmanns' kiln come pieces which rival the best in fine bone chinas. Today, eager buyers flock to their farm-studio near Saint John, N.B., to choose new pieces almost before they're cool. Many years of patient experimentation with a variety of glazes and designs have brought the Deichmanns to the front ranks of pottery makers as, under their sensitive fingers, each piece becomes, in its own way, a collector's item.
