Main Text
Montreal, site of the 1967 world's fair, is itself a good example of the exhibition's theme - "Man and His World". Modern and progressive, this is a city that works hard and plays zestfully, is ever eager to lead the way with the new and cherish the old, surge forward with technology and relax with the cultures of civilized mankind. In a city bounded by networks of ultra-modern expressways and bisected with a sparkling-new rubber-wheeled subway system, where elegant pedestrian walks link skyscrapers and electronic telephones are coming into operation, the world of culture thrives. The spacious Place des Arts where audiences throng to see the ballet and hear the symphony, the flourishing colony of artists, museums, universities and spacious parklands reflect from every side the proven adage that man lives not by material things alone. Between big, industrial plants concerned with space exploration and revolutionary ideas in the world of science are numerous peaceful backwaters of antique showrooms, bookshops and art galleries. From where the clangor of massive engineering and ship-building works produces ponderous products for big industry, a 70-mile-an-hour autoroute brings the traveller within a few hours of dense, forested wilderness where hulking moose and wary black bear roam in remote, natural splendor beside crystal-clear rivers and lakes. For Montrealers there are several of the many worlds of man to choose from and enjoy - and share with visitors from overseas during Canada's coming centennial year.
