Main Text
Leading the way into the world of the future is Montreal's ultra-modern downtown city within a city. Here, in the centre of Canada's largest (2,500,000-population) metropolis, the snow can snow, the wind can blow, the mercury boil in (or drop through the bottom of) the thermometer and for nearly a quarter million Montrealers and their guests, it is just another item in the newspapers. Today, in Montreal, visitors can check their coats and hats on arrival and spend a week or more of varied social and business activities without once caring for nature's whims and caprices. Hotel rooms and permanent residences, the rubber-wheeled metro, restaurants, art galleries, banks, business offices, international commercial commissions, barbers, theatres, bars, trade shows, design centres, railway stations, liquor stores, convention rooms - all these and more in vast profusion, are linked together by a network of underground and enclosed pedestrian walkways which in themselves offer the means of daily constitutionals of a mile or more. Further extensions to the 30-acre complex will link up with more and more of the downtown area's important centres of culture and business making possible such weather-impervious connections as a busy day in the stock exchange with an evening at the opera. Canada's exciting cosmopolitan city of Montreal has entered its space-age orbit - blazing the trail for other places still at the countdown stage.
