Main Text
NORTHERN NORWAY: SPRING 1968: The wind blows chill and mean between the white-clad mountains and half-frozen mud patches intersperse with the snow banks along the valley bottoms. The rain comes down with miserable monotony._x000B__x000B_For the Canadian soldiers, operating with their allies from Norway, Italy, the United States, Belgium and Holland, it is a case of watch for the enemy, try to keep dry, watch for the enemy, try to keep warm, watch for the enemy. _x000B__x000B_For days they have reconnoitered the lonely dirt roads, advanced in open formation across the wooded hillsides, patrolled the beaches and checked the vantage points. During long hours of arctic daylight and through the brief twilight they keep tense with the nervous alertness that comes from constant proximity to a tough, elusive foe. _x000B__x000B_But with ever-surprising suddenness come the inevitable jarring clashes with the enemy. Losses are suffered, gains made, ground given, advances made - and unforgettable lessons learned._x000B__x000B_Then with the exercise over, they shake hands with the enemy, this time Royal Marine Commandos from Britain, climb back into their big air transports and wing back to where they came from a week ago - 5,000 miles to their base camp in western Canada.
