One of 28,000 Canadian farms taking part in the annual maple syrup harvest, this 1,437-tree "sugar-bush" on the farm of Alfred Raby, supplies 500 gallons of syrup to the Canadian total of 2.5 millions. Beginning in late March, farm hands go about the job of collecting sap for refining. Aluminum buckets are suspended from spiles driven into the maple's trunk. Here, Yvon Chenier empties catch-bucket into barrel mounted on horse-drawn sled. Sap collected in this manner is brought to the "sugar-house" for boiling and refining.

It's maple sugar time! and this year farmers from Nova Scotia to Western Ontario will tap over 24 million maple trees in harvesting Canada's annual crop of 2.5 million gallons of syrup. This is a far cry from the mere trickle that went into the hollow-log catch-buckets of early Canadian pioneers. But despite some modern improvements, the romantic maple sugar industry has defied all attempts at mechanization. Trucks and tractors have been unable to match "Ol' Dobbin", who still manages to pull his share of the weight in gathering this crop on over 28,000 Canadian farms.
