Money, money everywhere, but not a cent for free, is the lament of many souvenir-hunting visitors to the Royal Canadian Mint at Ottawa where over 15,000 persons come annually to watch the 'hard money' being produced. Unknown to many, paper denominations are manufactured commercially in Ottawa. Here, 'roll sorting' copper penny blanks for stamping.

Each coin is cleaned, inspected and individually weighed before being passed for use. Imperfect pieces, returned to Mint refinery, are remelted. Coins moving along roller (above) are turned over automatically for examination of under surface.

Caption
New designs are prepared by the artist in the form of 8" plaster mold from which the coin stamping dies are cut on the Janvier reducing machine (above). In cutting die, machine can also reduce the image to as little as º" diameter. Each steel die, mounted in the press, 'strikes' thousands of coins before it must be replaced with fresh one.

Coin blanks arc punched like cookies out of a metal strip alloyed and rolled at the Mint. Fed into hydraulic press, shown here, up to 170 a minute can be stamped. With each stroke, the impression is stamped on top and bottom simultaneously.
