Visitors see a three-mile-long parade of Indians, cowboys, Mounties, 20 or 30 bands, stagecoaches and floats depicting city's growth from RCMP post to oil and cattle centre. Excitement of events and crowds of camera- wielding tourists lure 400 Indians to town for what they call The Week.

Most bronc riders are showmen, professional athletes who hold cards in a union that pays their medical bills when they're hurt, protects their rights but check-reins rowdy behaviour, and makes them file points from spurs to protect the horses. Five legs were broken in 1951 Stampede.

Bucking broncos and cowboys keynote the one and only Stampede, when citizens of Calgary don western skirts and jeans to re-live the old flamboyant West for one fun-filled week of square dancing, bulldogging, wild horse racing, wild cow milking, bareback riding. Even Texans admit the Stampede is the world's biggest rodeo. It takes 350 horses, 80 cows, 80 calves, some 50 Brahma bulls and 60 wild steers to stage the daily four-hour show from Monday to Saturday while Stampede scouts scour the west all year for ornery broncos.

Caption
Twenty-five thousand people, many from States, some from abroad, crowd into grandstand at Calgary's fair grounds to watch the world-famous spectacle. Most of the city's 2900 hotel rooms are booked six months ahead. Others are housed in two thousand-odd privates homes, for Stampede officials boast they have never turned anyone away. The crowd is gay in gaudy shirts and Easterners masquerade beneath new 10-gallon hats. Among them are old-timers who recall the first Stampede in 1912, when Calgary was only 37 years old.

Caption
Chuckwagon race is Stampede's most spectacular event. Covered wagons careen behind straining thoroughbreds in mad figure eight around centre field barrels. Hubcaps lock, wagons crash, horses tangle and pile up. The climax comes on Saturday night, the most thrill-packed race of all, for the driver with the best average time gets a championship trophy. All told, some 500 cowboys compete for about $40,000 in prize money. Champions gross as much as $50,000 a year, for rodeos today are big business, professional entertainment.
