To Canada's fighter squadron in Europe, life is a constant struggle to be high man in a jet plane, for in the battle for the skies, the man on top is the man with the edge. To keep RCAF fighter pilots flying at ever higher and higher altitudes is just one of a multitude of challenges which daily confront our country's air-minded research scientists and engineers. It was back in 1939 that the famous co-discoverer of insulin, Sir Frederick Banting, started investigations in the complex field of aviation medicine, thus laying the groundwork for present-day studies at the RCAF's Institute of Aviation Medicine in Toronto. The Institute's problem is a heavy one: as supersonic planes probe further and further into the stratosphere, can man be equipped to match the machine?
