A hat is all things to all women; morale booster, beauty-aid, creative outlet, head warmer -- but to a group of young girls enrolled in the millinery school at Montreal's Ecole des Métiers Commerciaux it is something more besides: it is the badge of their profession, their future livelihood.

When it comes to hats, the sky's the limit. Mr. G. LeTesrut, millinery school director, gives a course on the history of the hat. Above, he explains the phenomenon of the high-pointed "hennian" popular in the 15th century when the Gothic spire began to pierce the skyline of Europe. Some historians have seen a direct relationship between architectural trends and m'lady's hat.
