Few children can resist the appeal of the saucy parakeet, one of the most popular personalities in Canadian pet shops. Although there are hundreds of varieties of this charmer -- also known as the budgie or love-bird -- the one we know best is the grass shell parakeet, shown here. Back home in Australia, where he's been talking for centuries, the plains people call him the "betcherrygah" or "pretty bird". We bet the first native who called him that got a shock when the bird gave him the bird!
