Lobster is one of the islanders main sources of income followed by cod, mackerel and herring which are sold in the U.S. and West Indies as well as across Canada. Fishing cooperatives are popular with the Madelinots; a large-scale modernization program has been inaugurated in recent years involving the construction of freezing, canning and fish-smoking plants.

Up until 4 years ago, gas and oil lamps supplied the only light on the islands. An electric power plant, installed in December 1953 has brought modern conveniences and the prospects of many new industries.
