Self-contained St. Anthony is almost completely isolated except for occasional aircraft and fortnightly coastal boats. Major link with outside world is radio-telephone, which also brings word of sudden illness and emergency to Dr. Gordon Thomas and fellow mission worker Mrs. Dorothy Erb.

Main outpost in the Grenfell Association's far flung chain of battle stations is at St. Anthony, a tiny village 320 miles north of St. John's, Newfoundland. From here, each summer, the mission sends out the 70-foot hospital schooner, MARAVAL, to bring doctor and medicines to outports on the Labrador._x000B__x000B_Though the MARAVAL is equipped to handle emergency surgery, most major operations are performed in the mission headquarter's 75-bed hospital. Children's home, industrial workshop, and clothing store belonging to Grenfell Mission are also located at St. Anthony.

Founded by English medical-missionary Sir Wilfred Grenfell in 1892, the International Grenfell Association, for over 60 years, has waged a bitter seldom-spectacular war against the inroads of disease and hardship which go with life in northern Newfoundland and Labrador._x000B__x000B_Today the mission staffs and maintains hospitals and nursing stations extending from Newfoundland's northern tip to as far north on the Labrador coast as Northwest River. During routine medical visit, Dr. Gordon Thomas gives quick dental examination to 94-year-old resident of St. Anthony Bight.
