The sound of the noon-day gun on Newfoundland's historic Signal Hill overlooking the harbour of St. John's has been a tradition since 1842. In that year a local newspaper stated, "A gun will be fired at noon every day . . . which, to a certain extent, will supply the want of a public clock so much needed in this town". Visited by John Cabot in 1497, St. John's was claimed for Queen Elizabeth I by Sir Humphrey Gilbert in 1583.
