The white ensign has snapped in the salt breezes of Halifax harbour for over 200 years, and during these two centuries of peace and war, this historic naval base has developed to become one of the most important in the world. It was originally built in 1758 as an operational base for Royal Navy ships attached to the American Squadron. Fifty years ago, with the birth of the Canadian Navy, the dockyard (which today occupies 37 acres with a mile of waterfront) passed into Canadian hands.

The Second World War saw the emergence of Halifax as a mighty seaport. More than 30,000 ships sailed from this naval fortress during the war years and hundreds of warships were refitted and repaired at H.M.C. Dockyard for yet another turn at sea.

Skilled dockyard shipwrights, corking from blueprints, pictures and historical references, built this elaborate quarter-scale model of the 90-gun British warship NAMUR, flagship at the siege of Louisburg in 1758, and, in days gone by, a familiar sight in Halifax harbour. The colourful, 3-masted, ship-of-the-line led the parade of ships during last summer's celebrations marking the 200th anniversary of the dockyard. The NAMUR will be in the limelight again shortly when the navy celebrates its 50th birthday.

From the tender roots put down on the 4th of May, 1910, when the Naval Service of Canada was officially established, the navy (never a lusty infant) moved into gallant young manhood during the Second World War when the tiny naval force of some 1800 officers and men expanded dramatically to meet the bitter submarine threat stalking the vital supply lines to Britain. Today, the RCN, a mature and vigorous force, marks its Golden Jubilee with a memorable history of achievement and a proud record of battle honours.
