Supplanting radium in the treatment of cancer, the isotope Cobalt 60 is being used in some 36 Canadian designed beam therapy units in hospitals around the world. The Eldorado unite pictured is one of the three models built by Atomic Energy of Canada at its Ottawa factory.

Recognition of the almost unlimited potentialities of the atom as a tool for human good is becoming widespread in Canada as scientists in the fields of medicine, agriculture and industry daily discover new applications for the radio-active isotopes produced at Chalk River. Here, a technician makes a regional count of thyroid of a patient given a drink containing iodine 131. Radioactive iodine, collecting at the goiter source, emits rays which pinpoint the diseased area, at the same time destroying all excess thyroid tissue. Isotopes of gold and cesium are also being used in the treatment of cancer.
