Rev. Athol Murray, founder and director of Notre Dame des Prairies, went west from the Toronto Diocese in 1929. When the depression robbed high school graduates of jobs, he set up his Arts course to keep them employed.

Caption
Father Murray instructs some of his seniors in Romance literature. He also lectures in logic, metaphysics, aesthetics and history; in each of his courses he manages to impart to his classes much of his lively enthusiasm for the great thinkers of the past. The college has 51 students in its Arts course, is affiliated with Ottawa University. Fees are ridiculously low ($35) but students do most of the work about the campus.

Canada's Notre Dame College in Wilcox, Saskatchewan, boasts the most rugged campus in the world, the least pampered students, the best loved professor. No ivy walls, no ivory tower, enhance this prairie seat of learning; affectionately known as "shack college", it has a fiercely loyal student body proud of its reputation as "the college where character is built".

When the baseball diamond sinks deep in prairie gumbo, the team practises on main street . . . often it is just as bad, but the famous "Hounds" of Notre Dame take it in their "slide". The college has contributed several outstanding players to big league hockey, among them the Metz brothers. Father Murray sees to it that no disproportion exists between sports and studies; he is mainly concerned with turning out scholars.
