Caption
Careful pruning is an important part of orchard maintenance. Pruning permits sunlight (essential for bright colouring of fruit) to penetrate all parts of the tree. It also facilitates spraying, thinning and picking.

Apple trees require large quantities of moisture, bright bouts of sunshine and a temperate climate. The picturesque orchard above near Kamloops, B.C. is favoured by the ideal conditions prevailing in the Okanagan Valley. To maintain and improve Canada's prosperous fruit industry requires constant research into soil and fertilizer problems, insect and disease control, as well as the continuing search for new varieties.
