Caption
In the great coniferous forests of Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick, logging operations are carried out by 90 pulp and paper companies. Wood cut during the winter is stacked near frozen lakes and rivers and in spring, skilled river-drivers herd an annual 12 million cords of pulpwood to mills in one of Canada's most spectacular industrial operations.

Though the jet age is upon us, wood is still the Number One product today, as it was 150 years ago when Napoleon's wars put Canadian pine in such demand that this nation growing on a solid foundation of wood. Today, thirty-seven per cent of Canada is covered with vast trees, and the forest industries, an annual $2 billion dollar operation, are still the barometer of Canadian prosperity. Operating from lumber camps and company logging towns from New Brunswick to British Columbia, an army of 230,000 bush-workers each year invades the snow-covered forests for cutting operations.

The Logger, a new type machine developed by the Canadian Pulp and Paper Association in co-operation with paper companies, discharges its load of pulpwood logs down the steep banks of Ontario's Black River. With logging operations in 7 out of 10 provinces, the pulp and paper industry is first in employment with an annual $380 million payroll.

The insatiable world demand for newsprint, lumber and pulp products keeps both lumbermen and engineers racing at top speed to produce more wood. In vast forest stands where 500-year-old trees tower as high as 200 feet into the air, logging methods are becoming more and more mechanized, and the bulldozer is as much a symbol of modern logging as the axe and saw. Day and night production in woods operations is helped by this giant loading crane, here loading one cord of 4-foot logs onto truck. Pulp and paper is Canada's leading industry, supplying more than half the world's newsprint needs.
