Old-timer, M. Sadoth Tessier, has been fishing the Ste. Anne River for 71 of his 82 years. He uses pork liver for bait. Best fishing is at high tide, which rises 12 inches at Ste. Anne.

The tommycod are running, and, at the quiet Quebec town of Ste. Anne de la Pérade, where narrow French- Canadian farms roll down like ribbons to the Ste. Anne River, a carnival spirit fills the air as townsfolk and tourists turn out to join in the fun of fishing through the ice. Cabins, some 600 of them, rent for $5-$10 a night, are equipped with electricity, stoves, radios, and, to meet modern demands, television.
