Naval "frogman" Lieut.-Cdr. Ben Ackerman of Peterborough, Ont., checks his gear. This "free-diving" suit allows much greater mobility since the diver carries his air supply with him. The bottles contain oxygen and nitrogen, mixed in the required proportions according to the depth of the dive. Consumption of oxygen varies with water conditions and depth of the dive. In a 100-foot dive, bottles offer total endurance of 85 minutes.

Caption
This summer, Canada's Arctic patrol vessel, HMCS Labrador, will return for her 4th tour of duty in the Eastern Arctic where clearance divers, better known as "frogmen", will continue to clear underwater obstacles in uncharted and little known northern waters prior to the arrival of supply ships carrying stores for the men who guard lonely DEW Line outposts. Above, preparations are made to search the approaches to a landing beach. Divers are trailed underwater from ropes attached to either end of a pole lying across the boat.
